Welcome Residency Applicants Class of 2022!
The Department of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) and Tufts Medical Center (TMC) is the heir to a great tradition of clinical excellence, innovation, research and training. As the principal teaching hospital of the Tufts University School of Medicine, 17 of the 18 medical school clinical chairs are based at Tufts Medical School, including Paul Summergrad, MD, who is the Immediate Past President of the APA and the Frances Arkin Professor of Psychiatry and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at both TUSM and Tufts Medical Center.
TUSM and Tufts Medical Center are major academic medical resources. A center for tertiary and quarternary medicine with major adult and pediatric training programs in most specialties, the University and Medical Center are major research centers, including basic, molecular and clinical and translational science.
Psychiatry is in a unique period in its history. New technology and scientific perspectives have begun to yield deeper knowledge about the neurobiological underpinnings of major psychiatric illness. The growth of evidence based treatments – both pharmacologic as well as psychotherapeutic – have led to increasingly effective treatment for many of the most disabling psychiatric disorders. At the same time patients with psychiatric illness have high levels of medical co morbidity, with a multidirectional impact. Patients in the Medical Center, and at our affiliated teaching hospital, have complex medical illnesses, many of which can either have psychiatric manifestations or be affected by co occurring psychiatric illness. The role of evidence based and other forms of psychotherapy remain, however, a key element in the care of psychiatric illness.
Training in psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center takes account of all these trends, and in addition exposes psychiatry residents to a broad and deep full time faculty, with Professors with expertise in all major areas of psychiatric illness, research, psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Leaders in Medical psychiatry, clinical research, quality outcomes, psychotherapy- both psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral and family therapy,as well as psychopharmacology and forensic psychiatry work closely and collaboratively with clinical and basic science faculty from across the Medical center and TUSM. We hope in the upcoming materials to bring you a more in depth look at the department of psychiatry, its faculty and training programs.
